The National Museum of Natural History at the National Academy of

of the type in the world. It was established in 1966 as a unified
complex comprising five museums: the Geological, Paleonto- logical,
Zoological and Botanical. The National Museum of Natural History is
located in the heart of Kyiv, in an antique mansion with expressive and
remarkable architecture. The Museum complex itself was built in accordance with the
classical approach to museum study. More than 30 thousand speciments
which are exhibited in 24 halls occupying 8 thousand square meters
illustrate the origin, structure and evolution of the Earth, its plant
and animal life, its past and present, the history of the material
culture of the tribes and peoples that inhabited the territory of
Ukraine. The central place in the museums is occupied by a complex of
dioramas: 30 landscape expositions and biogroups. The National Museum
of Natural History is headed by Academician Yevhen Shniukov, the
National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Over the years of its existence the Museum complex has become widely
known and popular not only in Ukraine, but also far beyond its borders.
It has been registered in the world reference books. The National
Museum of Natural History has played a notable role in the formation of
modern ideas about nature, problems of mutual relations between man and
the environment. The institution has greatly contributed to the matter
of protecting and rational use of natural resources, and also to the
aesthetic education of the youth. Along with the dissemination of
scientific knowledge, the Museum carries out a large-scale research
work. It preserves unique scientific collections — the basis of the
research work of the Museum scientists. The collection materials are
the source of replenishing the exposition and its further development.

disposition used for the first time in the practice of Ukrainian
Museums of Natural History have made for its popularity and
significance. At the present time the Museum is one of the biggest
centers of museum matter and, according to authoritative experts, one
of the best modern research institutions of natural history in the
world. Undoubtedly, the Museum is the national property and pride of
Ukraine.
